Noise By-law Exemption

Noise By-law Exemption Applications

In the Township of Guelph/Eramosa, By-law #6001/24 (i.e. the "Noise By-law") is a key tool which helps regulate noise that may disturb residents, including: the playing of musical instruments after 11:00pm, the excessive revving of vehicles, or the outdoor operation of powered tools during certain hours of the days. Residents of the Township are encouraged to review By-law #6001/24 at the link provided here to learn more about the noise-related rules that help keep our Township a desirable space for all!

Occassionally, community members may wish to apply for temporary exemptions from the Noise By-law. This could include situations where you:

  • Are hosting a Special Event or Municipally Significant Event with the permission of the Township;
  • Are having a gathering at your home (e.g., wedding, birthday party, etc.); or,
  • Require work to be done on your property at a specific time that would otherwise not be allowed.

The Noise By-law Exemption process was designed to recognize these specific instances. Pursuant to Section 6.1 of the Noise By-law, any person may apply to the Township to be granted a temporary exemption from any of the provisions of the by-law, through the issuance of a Noise By-law Exemption Permit. Applicants are required to submit a request for an exemption no less than 30-days prior to the date for which the exemption is needed, and should note that, as of January 1st, 2026, the fee for a Noise By-law Exemption Application is $88.00.

Questions with respect to the Noise By-law Exemption process can be directed to the Township's Deputy Clerk.
